About the Root Chakra

The root chakra deals in survival and is blocked by fear.

  • Element: Earth

  • Influences:

    • Physicality and physical identity aspects of ourselves

    • Basic needs for survival (food, sleep, shelter, self-preservation, etc.)

    • Security, safety: Physical (body) or metaphorical (financial security, home)

    • The support and foundation for living our lives

  • When the root chakra is balanced, you have a feeling of safety and security, strength and vitality

  • When your root chakra is blocked or overactive:

    • Fear is your main motivating factor

    • You may have feelings of greed or insecurity

    • Issues of food intake prevail

  • What helps unblock or calm the root chakra:

    • Connecting intimately with the earth (gardening or going outside)

    • Physical activity

    • Focus on self-reliance

    • Go from a psychology of scarcity to personal abundance (if you’re not financially abundant, perhaps you are in other ways like with time, relationships, or space)

  • Yoga poses for the root chakra: siddhasana, sukhasana, virasana
