Step-by-Step Guide: 8 Ways to Celebrate International Yoga Day in 2025

Each year on June 21, the world pauses to breathe as one.

But this day isn't about poses or postures. It’s about presence. It’s a chance to remember that yoga is a way of being. It’s one breath, one choice, one sacred moment at a time. Let this step-by-stop guide be your invitation: to slow down, tune in, and move through the day with more love, light, and purpose.

  1. Begin with Ahimsa

Start your day with gentleness. Before the world asks anything of you, pause and choose kindness in word, in thought, and in action. Ashima, the principle of non-harming, begins inside. That means letting go of self-criticism, softening the inner dialogue, and leading with compassion.

Use our Ahimsa Workbook to ease into your day with heart-centered reflection. These pages aren’t just prompts, but an invitation to slow down and move through the world with more kindness.

  2. Step Outside and Ground Yourself in Nature

The earth is always speaking. On this day, take a moment to really listen. Reconnect with the natural world in a way that invites stillness.

Feel the bark of a tree with your fingertips. Let the morning breeze dance across your skin. Turn your glaze up and let the sky expand your sense of space. Bend down to smell a flower, or simply stand barefoot on the grass. Let nature be your first meditation, your first teacher.

  3. Create Sacred Space

When you clear your space, you clear your mind. It doesn’t take much—just a little intention. In yoga, we call this saucha—the practice of cleanliness and clarity, both in our physical environment and within ourselves. It’s about creating space for calm, focus, and renewal to flow in.

Tidy up your yoga corner, your desk, or even your living room. Wipe down your mat, light a candle, or open a window. These simple acts become sacred when done with presence. Whether you’re preparing for movement or stillness, let your environment reflect the clarity you’re calling in. Let it set a tone for your practice.

  4. Set a Soundtrack

Sound has the power to soften, uplift, and move us, sometimes without even saying a word. Let music set the tone for your Yoga Day. Whether you’re easing into a morning stretch, journaling with a cup of tea, or simply sitting in stillness, a calming soundtrack can help you settle into your breath and body.

Create a playlist of your own, or press play on our Hatha Yoga Playlist. Let the rhythm guide you, gently, back to presence.

  5. Just Show Up on Your Mat

Release the pressure to perform. You don’t need to do a perfect flow or power through an hour-long class. Today, and every day, just showing up is the practice.

Unroll your mat, take a seat, and breathe. Let go of what yoga “should” look like, and simply arrive. There’s no need to move a certain way or achieve anything at all. Just being there, with yourself, your breath, and your body, is enough. To help you get started, try a 10-minute guided breathwork session from our Yoga Day Companion.

  6. Commit to One Pose

You don’t need a full sequence. Just one pose that meets you where you are.

If your neck and shoulders feel tight, try Supported Fish Pose to open the heart and release the tension. If you’re craving a little movement, flow through a few Sun Salutations to awaken the body. Or, if your soul is asking for stillness, Child’s Pose always provides a reset.

    Or, try something new.

Sometimes the most refreshing thing you can do is step into the unknown. If your usual practice feels stale, explore a new yoga style or pose you’ve never tried. Not sure where to start? Look up Katonah Yoga, a blend of geometry, metaphor, and breathwork that’s quickly becoming a favorite among thoughtful practitioners.

    Let curiosity lead the way.

  7. Write What You’re Grateful For

Santosha, or contentment, teaches us that peace doesn’t come from what we gain, but from how we see. Today, invite gratitude into your practice.

Take a moment to journal three things you’re truly thankful for. They don’t need to be profound. A warm cup of tea. A smile from a friend. The way your body breathes, without you asking it to. Let the simple act of noticing shift your energy from longing to enoughness.

  8. Share with Intention

Yoga includes Svadhyaya, the practice of self-study. If you choose to share your experience today, whether on social media or in conversation, do so with honesty.

You don’t need a perfect pose or curated caption. Instead, share what’s real. A moment of reflection. A glimpse into your practice. A piece of wisdom you gathered along the way. The most powerful thing you can offer is your truth.
